In the morning, 26 teams will be divided into four groups (~6-7 teams per group), and a single round robin is played among all teams of the same group. There will be seven round robin rounds lasting 30-35 minutes each. The following chart shows a tentative Round Robin Schedule.
If there are any BYE rounds, please stay in your assigned room.
See the Round Robin room schedule matrix below. Round Robin group assignments are TBD.
Note: The MIT room numbering system is as follows:
Room numbers are in the form A-BCD.
A is the building,
B is the floor, and
BCD is the room number.
Ex. 10-105 (HQ) is on the 1st floor of Building 10.
Building locations may not be intuitive: building 4 is not near building 3.
Lunch will be served at 12:45pm in the Round Robin 7 competition rooms. After Round Robin, volunteers will bring you to Lobby 10 to pick up lunch. You may eat lunch anywhere on MIT campus, but we prefer you return to a Round Robin room to stay organized. Note that we only provide lunch for competitors, coaches, and parents; spectators can bring or buy lunch. The MIT Stratton Student Center is nearby and offers several dining options, along with a variety of restaurants nearby such as Chipotle, CAVA, and Saloniki. Feel free to consult a Maps search.
During lunch, any necessary tiebreaker rounds will be played, and the Double Elimination bracket will be finalized. If you are advancing to the afternoon Double Elimination rounds, check the live scoreboard for room assignments: www.mitsciencebowl.com/scoreboard. Please be in your next assigned room by 1:55pm.
See the scoreboard here for LIVE Double Elimination updates, including room assignments: www.mitsciencebowl.com/scoreboard.
The last three rounds of Double Elimination (DE5, DE6, and DE7) will be played in 10-250, which is open to all spectators. All spectators must adhere to rules written in the Tournament Rules section.
The Northeast Regional High School Science Bowl takes place on MIT campus. An interactive map of the campus can be found at whereis.mit.edu/. Parking is very limited on campus, but a list of parking near MIT can be found here. If possible, we encourage parking further away and using public transportation (the Boston MBTA or the 1 bus) to reach campus. Please note that without an Atlas mobile ID, you cannot tap into MIT buildings on weekends. After the opening ceremony in 10-250, volunteers will lead you to your first competition room.
The competition will be held across several Buildings: 10, 24, 26, 34, 56, and 66. The map to below marks competition areas and entrance points. There are two main entrances: Building 7 entrance is open to the public; we will have volunteers at Building 26 holding open doors.

We will be following official NSB rules. The field of 26 teams will be split into 4 groups of 7 or 8 teams, where a single round-robin will be played. The top 2 teams in each group will move onto the double elimination bracket. All rounds will have 8 minute halves, with 5 seconds to answer toss-ups and 20 seconds to answer bonuses. Tiebreakers will follow Section 9 of the official rules to determine Double Elimination placement, with DE seeding determined based on win-loss record, then head-to-head record, then points per game. The winner of the double elimination bracket will represent the New England Regional at the National competition.
NEW IN 2026: If you are bringing spectators (non team member/coach/co-coach), spectators are required to check-in with us, disclose their affiliated/supporting team, and show photo ID. Spectators will be allowed during both Round Robin and Double Elimination, but usage of electronic devices and audience disruption is prohibited in all rooms with actively competing teams. Spectators are only allowed to enter and leave the room while the door is open. Room officials reserve the right to remove spectators that are deemed to be causing distractions.
